AS and A level Law offer you the opportunity to gain an insight into the legal system and at the same time to develop analytical skills that will be useful in any area of work or higher education. They are especially relevant if you are considering one of the many careers connected with the law such as the police, the probation service, social work or the legal profession. In AS Law you will learn about and evaluate how our laws are made and discover the various ways in which disputes may be resolved. You will also investigate and consider the concepts of liability in crime and tort. In A2 you will study Criminal Law in more depth, focusing on fatal and non-fatal offences against the person and offences against property. The Law department enters a team of students for the Bar National Mock Trial competition. This gives them the opportunity to become barristers, witnesses or defendants in a real Crown Court in front of a real judge. The judge decides which team has presented the best case. Students can visit London and watch real criminal cases at the Old Bailey. The visit to London also includes a guided tour of Parliament.
