English Lit (GCE2Y)

UPDATED 20161006 08:56:35

English Literature AS & A Level: Our English course is an intensive literature based course which offers students plenty of scope to develop their reading interests. Students are introduced to a whole range of prose (fiction and non-fiction), poetry and drama both modern and pre-twentieth century. Some of the texts we study will form the basis of coursework, and some of the texts will be in preparation for the examinations in May. There are many reasons for studying English literature – a facilitating subject - including: • The opportunity to learn more about ourselves: anyone interested in the key, momentous events in human life should study literature as throughout the ages writers have explored those aspects of life which motivate. • The opportunity to learn more about others - from different ages, of different cultures, of different backgrounds. Literature allows the reader to experience imaginatively people, places, relationships and events that we would never otherwise be able to explore. • To develop our skills of comprehension and analysis. • The growing understanding that texts can be interpreted in different ways. • The development of communication skills, both written and spoken. • For personal satisfaction – because we love to read! All the texts we cover at A Level are considered outstanding works of literature. We hope that you will enjoy most, if not all, of them but what is most important is that you keep an open mind and can start to appreciate why a particular a piece of literature is considered ‘great’. During the course students will read widely and independently both set texts and others that they have selected for themselves. All the texts covered at A Level are considered outstanding works of literature. We hope that students will enjoy most, if not all of them.
