This course is ideally suited to those who want to carry on with English as studied at GCSE. It develops students’ ability to understand and analyse fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as providing an opportunity for creative writing. To improve your use of the English language and to enjoy using it to develop research, investigation and analytical skills which is excellent preparation for further study or entering the workplace; to develop students’ interest in reading and studying non-fiction, fiction, drama and poetry; to encourage enthusiastic engagement with the ideas in texts and the writer’s crafting of language; to promote discussion of literary ideas in a co-operative and explorative seminar setting. What could I go on to next? Teaching; journalism; advertising; law; civil service; any job that requires advanced communication skills.

Name: A Level English Language and Literature Qualification title: GCE A Level in English Language and Literature Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment Component 1 Voices in Speech and Writing: Section A: comparison of an unseen non-fiction text with one from the non-fiction Anthology: Section B: a response to an extract from a studied play. Component 2 Varieties in Language and Literature Section A: a response to an unseen non-fiction prose text: Section B response to the studied novel and one other literary text. Component 3 Coursework: Free choice of fiction and non-fiction text: Produce two pieces of creative writing: one fiction and one non-fiction with a commentary on both pieces. 1500-200 words for the creative writing pieces and 1500-2000 for the commentary.
