The course follows the OCR syllabus. In the first year we look at where laws come from. This involves studying Parliament and the how it creates laws and Judge-made laws and how these evolve as society changes. We also study juries and magistrates, visiting the criminal courts in Truro. We study police powers and suspects’ rights, with visits from the police and other outside bodies. We have class debates on important issues such as compulsory jury service, human rights, or sexism in the law. Mock trials are also held. Students are encouraged to research topics, make notes, with learning re-enforced with games and quizzes. In the second year criminal offences such as homicide, theft, assault and attempt are studied using a variety of activities - role play, cartoon storylines, mock news reports, games, debates and video presentations. Past papers are used extensively to prepare for all examinations. The course aims to be interesting and sometimes amusing, but most importantly, attempts to get the best out of all students.
