GCE AS Level in Computer Science Course Overview BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Computer Science. The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Computing is equivalent in size to one A Level. It is aimed at post 16 learners who are interested in a career in Computer Science or further study at university. The course examines algorithms and programming techniques, use of computer systems and designing computer solutions. It allows learners to gain fundamental knowledge and skills in computing in Year 12 from which they can progress to a more specialist focus in Year 13. Units to be completed: Unit 1: Principles of Computer Science. Unit 2: Fundamentals of Computer Systems. Unit 7: IT Systems Security and Encryption. Optional Unit: students will be able to choose a specialism to focus on in Year 13. Assessment 50% Assignment 50% Examination Combines with BTEC ICT, Business Studies. Future Pathways The course could lead on to a degree in Computer Science. It also provides a pathway for employability by covering the following key skills: The ability to learn independently.
