As a historian you will examine and interpret evidence to understand causation, consequence, change and continuity within a historical context. You will study predominantly Modern History, spanning a course of well over one hundred years. The focus will be on the Nineteenth Century and how this period changed the world as we know it. This was the period that introduced mass industrialisation, bore witness to the growth of cities and vast empires and sowed the seeds of two of the world’s most destructive conflicts. Specifically, the Modern History component of the course revolves around the development of nationalism in Nineteenth Century Europe, especially in Italy and Germany and international relations in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The British element of the course looks at change and continuity, with a special focus on political and social development, throughout this period. Some students at AS will also have the opportunity to study the Norman Conquest of Britain in 1066 and will specifically focus on societal, political and economic transition between Anglo-Saxon and Norman Britain during this period. As well as the knowledge and interests you will gain, History at A level helps you develop the strong research and analytical skills that are necessary in a modern world. The very best universities will respect your study of History, even if you do not wish to study it at degree level. Skills of research, analysis, and the structuring of evidence based on written argument, are pivotal for a wide range of other courses, ranging from the sciences (including Medicine, Engineering, or Economics) to the humanities (such as English, Law, Politics or Languages).History will always be highly valued by the professional, legal, political and business sectors too, both for its subject content and its intellectual rigour, and habits of critical thinking that it helps to develop within.
