Studying Philosophy and Ethics in the Sixth Form involves asking big questions of yourself, the people around you and the world in which you live. It will challenge the way you think about life and death, the way people behave and whether we know what we think we know to be true. The topics studied in AS Level Philosophy consider the ancient Greek and Judeo-Christian influences on modern philosophy, including the traditional arguments for the existence of God. You will consider whether God can be experienced, and if so, what the purpose of the experience is, and whether atheism is a real alternative to religion in the modern day. In AS Ethics, you will study the theories of major ethical thinkers and apply them to practical topics such as the nature and value of human life, abortion and medical ethics. At A2, you will develop your understanding of issues raised at AS. In Philosophy, this will involve considering life, death and beyond, while in Ethics you will study approaches to the notion that human beings are free, considering the notions of free will and determinism, human relationships and science and technology. In the first year, you will sit two papers, one covering Philosophy and one Ethics.
