Topics studied throughout Core 1 to Core 4 will cover algebra, geometry and calculus. The applied modules are Mechanics 1 (M1), Decision 1 (D1) and Statistics 1 (S1). In M1, you will consider mathematical models, based on Newtonian mechanics, to explain how and why things move or stay still. In D1, numerical methods, brought to the forefront of mathematics through increased use of the computer, are taught. In S1, further study will occur in the areas of probability, descriptive statistics and statistical distributions. Further Mathematics modules include Further Pure 1 and 2 and applied modules Mechanics 2, Decision 2 and Statistics 2.
Name: AS Level Mathematics Qualification title: GCE AS Level in Mathematics Qualification type: Assessment The AS course in mathematics is a one year course which comprises of 3 modules, all of which have an exam at the end of the year in June. The modules studied are Core 1, Core 2 and one applied module from Mechanics 1, Decision 1 or Statistics 1. The A2 course is a second year, following on from AS Maths, where the next 3 modules are Core 3, Core 4 and another applied module from Mechanics 1, Decision 1 or Statistics 1. Again these modules have an end of year exam for each module. The AS/A2 Further Mathematics is a more advanced course which is strongly recommended for students who wish to progress to a mathematics or STEM-based degree or those who have a flair for the subject. The AS requires 3 more different modules to the A Level course and 6 for the A2. Some students spread the AS over two years or take this one year course in Y13, when they are clearer about their future plans and have had a successful first year at AS.
