ABOUT THE COURSE Students study Edexcel Music Technology at A level. Facilities in the Academy for this are excellent and a new A-Level Music Tech Suite has just been completed with wired links to a soundproof professional quality recording studio and Apple Mac computers with all relevant composition and performance software. OVERVIEW OF CONTENT This Music Technology specification involves much practical work and encourages the cultivation of a wide range of skills. Students will have opportunities to: • sequence MIDI • sequence audio • record live instruments • produce CDs • compose using music technology Students will also have opportunities to build understanding of the technical processes and principles that underpin effective use of music technology, and comment on it in writing. HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED COMPONENT 1 - RECORDING Production tools and techniques to capture, edit, process and mix an audio recording. Students complete one recording, from a list of 10 songs provided by Pearson, consisting of a minimum of five compulsory instruments and two additional instruments. COMPONENT 2 - TECHNOLOGY-BASED COMPOSITION Creating, editing, manipulating and structuring sounds to produce a technology-based composition. Students create one technology-based music composition chosen from three briefs. COMPONENT 3 - LISTENING AND ANALYSING Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes. COMPONENT 4 - PRODUCING AND ANALYSING Written/practical examination: 2 hours 15 minutes (plus 10 minutes setting-up time). This paper comprises two sections: A and B and all questions are compulsory.
