The A Level comprises of two examinations for AS level and a further two examinations for the full A Level, with the addition of non exam assessment (coursework) in Year 13. The AS specification focuses on different ways of reading and the connections that exist between texts within a literary genre. The two broad genres available or study are tragedy and comedy. Students will look at the ways in which authors shape meanings within their texts and to consider a wide range of relevant contexts. The A level also has a focus on genre and the four genres available for study are tragedy, comedy, crime writing and political and social protest writing. The flexibility offered by the choice of genres and texts, and the interconnectivity of these, ensure that teachers have the freedom to create the appropriate course for the students
