About the course Building on knowledge gained in the GCSE course, students will expand on subjects like trigonometry, statistics and probability. They will also be introduced to new topics such as calculus, logarithms and regression. The course follows a modular structure and assessment is based on 100% examination. Why should I choose Maths? Mathematics is the pursuit of a logical mind that applies itself to solving an array of problems. Successful students develop a fundamental life skill that puts them at an advantage to pursue a large portfolio of career paths. You will learn new mathematical skills through a mixture of written work and discussion. Learning will be supported through the use of ICT modelling and graphical representation. What will I study? The A Level Mathematics course is an exciting opportunity to explore some of the deeper and more interesting mathematical concepts such as calculus and geometry. It builds on much of the content covered at KS4. Over the course you will study four core modules and two statistics modules. Year 12 encompasses two core modules which cover algebra, graphs, differentiation, trigonometry and sequences, and a Statistics module encompassing averages, probability and distributions. Year 13 involves the completion of two more core modules involving algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; numerical methods; coordinate geometry and a mechanics module. What could it lead to? Higher education courses including Mathematics, Engineering, Physics and Computing. Beneficial to those wanting to study Accountancy, Economics, Veterinary Science and Medicine. Employers favour any candidate who has attained an A level in Mathematics; a recent report in the Times Educational Supplement said that young people with an A level in Mathematics can earn 10% more than those without the qualification over their working career.
