The course is taught in 4 units. • Unit 1 and 2 make up the AS qualification and are delivered in year 1. • Unit 3 and 4 make up the A2 qualification and are delivered in year 2. Unit 1 - Exploration of drama and theatre. This unit is 20% of the full A level. Two scripted plays are studied in a practical way, looking at the work of one theatre practitioner. Each student completes a videoed workshop and a set of exploratory notes, including a review of a live performance. Assessment is internal, with work moderated by the exam board. Unit 2 - Theatre text in performance. This is 30% of the full A level. This assessment takes the form of a practical examination, with a visiting examiner. Each student shows a performed monologue or duologue, and takes part in a scripted play as part of a larger group. Unit 3 - Exploration of dramatic performance. This is 20% of the full A level. Students create a piece of original devised work, and a set of accompanying written notes. This unit is internally assessed and externally moderated by the exam board. Unit 4 -Theatre in context. This is 30% of the full A level. This is an externally marked written exam in 3 sections. Section A and B will be about the classic play concerning women and war, Lysistrata. Section C will be a comparison between theatre during Shakespeare’s time and today. Students will be expected to answer as actors or directors and supporting notes may be taken into the exam. A trip to see the chosen text will be arranged and will be a compulsory part of the course.
