This popular course is concerned with a critical analysis of the history, structure, economics and production of the media and emphasises learning from a combination of theoretical and practical approaches. Theoretical areas of study include: textual analysis of the representation, audience and institution in TV Drama; a specific, detailed study of the Film Industry and a detailed examination of a Contemporary Media Issue. Alongside this is the practical production work. This will require candidates to demonstrate learning of the media through practical work in two different mediums (Video and Magazine) in both the AS and A2 year. The department possesses its own facilities for video filming and editing and access to computers throughout the school. Students will need to compile evidence of planning through the construction and maintenance of their own blog. It must be emphasised that while the study of this syllabus entails 50% assessed practical work there is still a crucial academic component and it is therefore still not seen as being suitable for students whose main strengths are practical or who are seeking to become media technicians. Although a high percentage of students pursue university degrees in media-related subjects, Media Studies is an excellent complement to more traditional degree subjects.
