Religion and Ethics The Ethics course looks at how religious and secular people make moral decisions, and the strengths and weaknesses of each moral theory. We discuss research and apply the moral theories to current affairs and ethical dilemmas. There is no coursework, but there is a clear need to write fluently and to be able to produce a clear, well balanced written argument. Religion and Philosophy In the Philosophy course we discuss classical theories for proving the existence of God such as the Cosmological argument, as well as looking at Religious Experience and Psychology to see if they can prove the existence of God. There is no coursework but students should be able to see different points of view as well as their own and be able to express them in writing. Religion & Ethics This course builds on the ethics course from the previous year, using the students’ knowledge of ethical theories; they study a new ethical theory, Virtue ethics, as well as studying new ethical topics. The topics studied are Science and Technology, Sexual Ethics and Free Will and Determinism. There is no coursework, only an end of year exam. Synoptic Paper: Life, Death and Beyond We study near death experiences’ the concept of the soul, secular and religious ideas about the apocalypse and the way the Media interprets these and much more. The key idea is to compare and contrast religious and secular views on Death and beyond. Students need to be able to bring together all their knowledge from the two years to answer their exam questions, there is no coursework in this part of the exam.
