This course covers a range of different D&T skills and design issues. It will enable you to develop your ability to design and make products and appreciate the relationship between the designer and the consumer. By developing an understanding of the life-cycle of products you will be able to consider the various materials, manufacturing methods and final disposal of products and the broader issues such as sustainability and consumer safety. AS Assessment Format and Course Description Studies in year 12 have been designed to build upon the skills already gained at GCSE. You will study the theoretical aspects needed to develop your knowledge and understanding of materials and manufacturing processes as well as the role of the designer in society. There will also be sessions in CAD/CAM and several design projects to complete that combine to create a portfolio for assessment. These include scale furniture, storage and jewellery making. Unit 1: Exam – Materials, components and application Unit 2: Coursework – A portfolio of project work completed A2 Assessment Format and Course Description In Year 13 there is one single self directed project. This forms the main practical element of the course and is supplemented with theory aspects to enable students to prepare for the final exam. Unit 3: Exam – Design and manufacture Unit 4: Coursework – ‘Major Project’. You will design and make a product of your choice Possible Careers and Higher Education During the course there are opportunities to visit relevant exhibitions, industries and lectures to assist with your studies. Such as: the Design Museum, Vitra, the V&A, Disneyland Paris and New Designers. This course is suitable for anyone interested in a career in ‘Design’. This includes: Product, Interior, Graphics, 3D, Jewellery, Automotive, Promotions, Exhibitions, Engineering, Architecture etc...
