M10C01F: This course will look at the key events and ideas that shaped the growth of the American West between the 1860s and the 1900s. It aims to show that there is a lot more the know about this fascinating region in this period than the picture presented in films and on TV. This is an introductory course, aimed at anyone who has an interest in the American West and how our understanding of this period has been shaped. No prior knowledge is needed although a good background in modern representations of the West, on film or TV, would be useful.
