A Level Philosophy & Ethics

UPDATED 20150930 08:33:46

What will I learn? Philosophy and Ethics is about using rational argument and logical thinking to shine a light on life’s big questions. It will encourage a greater understanding of the world we live in as you consider thought provoking questions. This course will ask the moral questions such as… What are the issues concerning war, euthanasia, abortion and genetic engineering? At what point does life begin? (Does this affect abortion?) Do you have the right to end life? (What about Euthanasia?) Is war always wrong? (Would you defend your rights and beliefs?) Can we play God? (What about IVF, older parents, designer babies or cloning?) What does religion say about all of this? We will also ask the ultimate questions… Is it possible to measure all actions in terms of right or wrong? How can there be a God in a world of evil and suffering? Who will win, Science or Religion? (Does it matter?) Are we naturally moral, or are we by nature selfish creatures? Can there be a life after death? Is there any evidence of real miracles? How will I be assessed? You will be assessed by two exams (1 1/2hrs each), with each being 50% of the AS. For A2 you will do a further two exams, again 50% each. (No coursework) Is there anything else I need to know? Philosophy and Ethics does not require any Religious Studies, History or Critical Thinking. It is a course which teaches you how to take responsibility for your own learning, and demands a high degree of self-motivation to read around subject content outside of lessons. Resources (including your own text books) will be provided, and your teachers will be there to help. Be prepared to contribute and argue a particular point of view, revise on a regular basis and ask a lot of questions, especially when it comes to ethical arguments. (Leaflets with more information are available from teachers)
