What will I learn? AS Level: In the pure units you will extend your understanding of Mathematics, studying further algebra, graphs, trigonometry, series, calculus, numerical methods, matrices and transformations and complex numbers. In the applied unit Mechanics 1 your studies will include mathematical modelling, kinematics, statics and forces, momentum, Newton’s Laws of Motion, connected particles and projectiles. In the applied unit Mechanics 2 you will develop topics studied in Mechanics 1 and study moments, centres of mass, energy, kinematics and circular motion. You will learn how to use Mathematics in various contexts and how to communicate your solutions effectively. A2 Level: Statistics 2 develops the idea of hypothesis testing. In the pure units, you will study complex numbers, proof by induction, finite series, hyperbolic functions, vectors, matrix algebra, and three dimensional co-ordinate geometry. You will continue to develop the ability to communicate your solutions and to use Mathematics in a variety of situations. How will I be assessed? Written examinations. What are the entry requirements? Must meet the standard A Level entry requirements for the 6th form. Future opportunities The A Level in Further Mathematics demonstrates the ability to solve problems and analyse logically at the highest level, as well as showing a mastery of advanced mathematical techniques. With an A Level in Further Mathematics, you will find yourself extremely well qualified for many different careers. If you are planning on going to university and thinking of studying Mathematics or a maths related degree, it is highly desirable for you to have studied Further Mathematics at A Level.
