The current A-level Media Studies specification offers students a comprehensive and integrated coverage of media theory and practice. There's a focus on new technologies, and students will complete practical work in both AS and A2. The course covers a variety of contemporary topics and debates, from the way the media presents news and fiction, the impact of technological and e-media changes, to the production of marketing for a musical artist. Students will learn: • how to research, plan and construct media products using appropriate technical and creative skills • to evaluate their own practical work • to understand codes and conventions of the different platforms (broadcasting, e-media, print) • how to apply knowledge and understanding when analysing media products and processes • to increase their knowledge and understanding of media concepts • to develop enquiry, critical thinking and decision-making skills • to develop their knowledge and understanding of contexts and critical media debates and issues. The subject is currently assessed using a 50/50 split between examination and coursework elements. At AS students will undertake a practical project following a brief set by the exam board which will allow them to develop research, undertake pre-production work before completing the practical element of the unit. Students will create 2 linked production pieces before evaluating their portfolio. AS students will sit an examination which is split between 4 short essay style questions; testing their application and knowledge of the 4 key media concepts, and an extended essay question based on a case study.
