Please note that this course is reforming for September 2017, specific details have yet to be released so this is a general overview of what could be offered. In the first year students will learn about how the law works within England focusing on the courts. Students will gain an understanding of the civil courts and other methods of dispute resolution, criminal process, criminal courts, the penal system and the judiciary. It will also potentially cover the legal profession, lay people in the legal system and the provision of legal services. Students will also cover sources of Law. This will help students to understand where the process of our law making comes from, covering the doctrine of precedent, legislation, statutory interpretation, European Union law and law reform. Students are encouraged to examine where our laws come from and the role that EU plays in dictating our laws. In the second year students will need to cover the principles of public and private law, this will include criminal law, tort and contract law. In terms of criminal law and to develop a critical awareness of the present state of criminal law in relation both to the scope of specific crimes and the applicability of particular defences. They are expected to have a general appreciation of the role of criminal law in modern society and to be able to relate this to specific issues, e.g. whether it is justifiable to have crimes of strict liability. Within this unit students will look at the principles of criminal liability, attempted crimes, offences against the person, general defences, non-fatal offences against the person and offences against property.
