A Level English Literature

UPDATED 20151002 07:51:48

English Literature at A Level enables students to develop an understanding of literary texts of different genres from Shakespeare to the present day. During the course students will study a total of 8 texts drawn from drama, prose and poetry. In the first year there will be a focus on the literary genre of Tragedy, through the study of modern drama, and the theme of childhood through the study of two novels. Students will also have the opportunity to study contemporary poetry. In the second year students continue their study of tragedy and childhood by focussing on a Shakespearian tragedy and also engage with the works of a poet from the literary canon. 20% of the marks are awarded for coursework, which enables students to engage in wider and independent reading with a link to literary theory. This course is suitable for students who have excellent analytical and written skills. We expect students to be involved in class and group discussions and to be prepared to test out their own opinions and ideas while listening to others.
