This vocational course provides a taster for those interested in a career working with children, and is extremely suited to students who wish to pursue a career in teaching. It is a 1 A Level Equivalency course, delivered across 2 years and is to be taken alongside other A Levels. In the first instance, you will learn all about children’s expected developmental progress from birth to 8 years and factors affecting this. You will also study and apply current and relevant thinking behind child development including behaviour theories; Models of cognitive and language development; and theories behind personality and self-esteem. Theoretical approaches to play and learning will also be explored in depth, and you will examine how a range of play activities support children’s learning and development, and understand the importance of your involvement in purposeful play/activities. In the second year of the course, you will begin to explore the role of the professional more, gaining a firm understanding of how to keep children safe and secure, including through responding to concerns, identifying child abuse and promoting child welfare. You will learn how to assess health and safety risks in a setting, and control/prevent infection. You will develop an understanding of early mathematical and literacy development, gaining an understanding of how you can support this development. In addition, you will carry out and record accurate observations of children, assessing their individual needs accurately, and creating, implementing and reviewing activity plans for children.
