The course followed is the AQA Specification. The ‘A’ Level syllabus is arranged in the form of six modules. Assessment of experimental skills are carried out in all the modules, with two pieces of assessed coursework, one in AS and one in A2. These are called Externally Marked Practical Assessments (EMPAs) There are three compulsory modules at AS Level and 3 more at A2 Level. AS – Programme of Study:: BIOL1 – Biology and Disease (diseases, digestion, structure of heart, lungs and the role of enzymes) BIOL2 – The Variety of Living Organisms (DNA structure and function, cells, gas exchange, blood, adaptations and biodiversity) BIOL3X – Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Biology – here students will use their knowledge of the AS specification to pose scientific questions and define scientific problems – This is a externally assessed unit.

Name: Biology (AS) Qualification title: GCE AS Level in Biology Qualification type: Assessment Modules BIOL1 and BIOL2 are assessed by written examinations, together they account for 80% of the final AS mark. BIOL3 is an externally assessed coursework investigation making up the other 20% of the AS mark. This consists of a Practical Skills Assessment (PSA) and an Externally Marked Practical Assessment (EMPA). Entry requirements

Students are actively involved in their learning through a variety of activities including research tasks and experimentation in the field (an optional residential course runs at the end of AS year that benefits components of the A2 course). Students will be required to attend ‘buddy sessions and mentoring sessions, as well as purchase the appropriate revision guide. The Academy will not charge for books, materials, equipment and instruction in connection with the National Curriculum or Statutory Religious Education taught at school, except where parents have indicated in advance their wish to purchase the product.
