In ‘Art and Design textiles’, students have the opportunity to combine practical and creative skills to design and make products, which appeal to a range of consumers. Rigorous techniques are investigated and experimented with to help develop a unique product which could be functional or non-functional. They learn to use current technologies and skilfully combine and blend ideas in visual and other means. They learn to analyse existing designers, artists and draw upon contemporary styles and media to enhance their final product through 2D or 3D form. They respond with mixed media ideas which combine a range of in-depth fabric embellishment techniques, challenging expectations where appropriate. Students develop confidence in using practical skills and become discriminating users of products. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to cultivate effective study skills.
