UPDATED 20150923 16:35:17

This course is designed to enable you to gain the knowledge, skills and competence required by the modern automotive service repair industry. To enrol on an apprenticeship course you must be employed by an approved automotive business that can provide the 'on the job' training and work experience needed to complete the qualification. As an apprentice you will receive 'on the job' training at your workplace and also attend 'day release' training at Boston College. The apprenticeship framework consists of several elements which have been identified by employers as the foundation for a competent automotive technician: A knowledge based qualification - Diploma in Light Vehicle maintenance and repair principles, A skill based qualification - Diploma in Light Vehicle maintenance and repair competence, Functional skills (Maths, English, Information and Communication Technology), Employment Rights and Responsibilities. The diploma is delivered 50% in classroom and 50% in workshop by lecturers who have worked in the automotive industry. Course content includes health, safety and good housekeeping, job roles within the automotive industry, vehicle systems, components, inspection and repair methods, materials & fabrication skills. An additional self-study assignment is required to complete the Employment Rights and Responsibilities unit. Delivery of the qualification is supplemented by visits to vehicle manufacturers, museums and shows, this helps broaden your perspective of progression opportunities following successful completion of the course. The employer will also provide training whilst you are at work and this will contribute to the learning and accreditation process through the collection of evidence. You will have regular reviews with a training advisor to help you to plan your learning journey on an individual basis. This is your opportunity to plan realistic targets and maximise your potential.
