History

UPDATED 20161003 13:08:47

As well as an insight into the past, and therefore a greater understanding of the present, A level History aims to provide students with analytical skills which can be applied in many varied contexts. A good historian will learn to understand, appreciate and evaluate different perspectives and interpretations. They will also learn to think independently, develop their own arguments and justify their opinions with both evidence and reason. The Tudors: England, 1485–1603 In Year 12, the major focus is the growth of political stability under Henry VII before studying the young Henry VIII and his divorce and the start of the reformation. In Year 13, you will begin by studying the later Tudors: the boy king, Edward VI, the catholic ‘bloody’ Mary and Elizabeth I and her problems such as Mary Queen of Scots and the threat from Catholic Spain. Revolution and Dictatorship: Russia and the Soviet Union, 1917–1953 In Year 12, you will study the revolutions of 1917 and why Russia became the world’s first country to undergo a communist revolution. Year 13 is then the story of that dream going horribly wrong. You will examine the impact of Stalin’s aims, actions and influence on the USSR. Historical Investigation This unit provides a fantastic opportunity to research a topic of your own choosing. For the first time in your school career you will take control of what you study. You will choose a topic that interests you and, with help from your teachers, come up with a question that covers a 100 year period. It is an opportunity not to be missed.
