UPDATED 20161031 15:39:55

The A Level Media studies course aims to enhance students’ enjoyment and appreciation of the media and its role in their daily lives;help them to develop critical understanding of the media through engagement with media products and concepts and through the creative application of production skills; enable them to explore production processes, technologies and other relevant contexts; and become independent in research skills and their application in their production work and in developing their own views and interpretations. The Year 13 units of the course comprise of Units MS3 ‘Media Investigation and Production’, and MS4 ‘Text, Industry and Audience’, each of which account for 50% of Year 13 assessment, and 25% of the whole A Level. Media Investigation & Production comprises three components: a written investigation into media text(s) based on one or more of the key media concepts – genre, narrative and/or representation (45); a media production (45); and an evaluation of how the production is informed by the investigative research (10). (Group work permitted for audio-visual productions only.) Media – Text, Industry and Audience comprises three questions (30 marks per question). Section A: one question from a choice of two. Section B: two questions from a choice of four. Candidates must answer each question on a different media industry. Pupils are assessed throughout the course on their ability to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of media concepts, contexts and critical debates. 2. Apply knowledge and understanding when analysing media products and processes, and when evaluating their own practical work, to show how meanings and responses are created. 3. Demonstrate the ability to plan and construct media products using appropriate technical and creative skills. 4. Demonstrate the ability to undertake, apply and present appropriate research.
