The course develops an awareness of the importance of geographical knowledge and understanding in the decision making processes which go on in a wide range of occupations. Students are encouraged to develop competence in a variety of practical skills to support their geographical knowledge and understanding e.g. data collection and statistical analysis and the use of fieldwork and weather recording equipment. Case studies are drawn from various countries in the developed and less developed world and are illustrated by reference to current issues such as famine of flooding, inner city development, pollution and other pressures on the environment, the effects of natural hazards and the plight of refugees. This is a two year course and will be examined in year 13.
