In the first year, students will study a variety of units that will include works by modern writers, playwrights and poets who provide us with our rich literary heritage. You will develop an understanding of these areas through the application of key skills such as: essay writing, argument construction and close textual analysis, focusing on language, structure and form. In the second year, students will develop the skills learned in the first year. Students will apply the key skills to a greater range of texts, representative of the whole Literary Canon. You will be expected to analyse texts in greater detail and with more independence and there is more room for independent study within your chosen area of interest. You will be assessed through regular monitoring and feedback in a variety of forms. Essays that analyse the studied texts will be set regularly and, in the second year, you will undertake a major coursework project. In addition, you will need to contribute to class discussions and present your ideas to the class as well as undertake independent wider reading.
