In the first year, you will study a variety of topics which will develop your understanding of different aspects of English: from the rules of grammar; to the impact of new technologies on the way we all use English; to how men and women use language differently and for different purposes. You will learn these areas through the application of key concepts such as: grammar, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse. In the second year, you will develop the skills learned within the first year. You will apply the key concepts to texts in greater detail, looking at how children learn language and how the English Language itself has developed over time. The coursework element provides greater room for independent study relating to each candidates’ chosen area of study. You will be assessed through constant monitoring and feedback both in class and through more formal pieces of written work. Throughout each year, you will produce essays to prepare for the exam units and you will keep an exercise book in which you will collate class notes. You will also be expected to complete independent work, including wider reading, outside of the normal classroom activities. In the second year, you will work on your coursework, investigating an area of language and writing about it in a variety of ways.
