It is almost impossible to get through a day without using Maths in some way. Our world is full of numbers to handle and problems to solve. Studying maths provides students with the tools to make sense of it all. Maths is an incredibly versatile subject and fits well with virtually any combination of A Levels. The subject provides good preparation for many university courses including Medicine, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology, Architecture and Engineering. Alison Wolf, Professor of Public Sector Management at Kings College, London, has highlighted the economic returns on post16 Maths qualifications. Even after allowing for every other factor imaginable, people who took A Level Maths earn around 10 percent more than those who did not! This represents approximately additional earnings of 136,000 pounds over a lifetime. Key skills that all employers look for are problem solving, analysis, data handling and communication, all of which are developed by studying Maths. Few job titles have the words Maths or statistics in their titles but you do not have to be called a mathematician to use Maths. In fact, no matter what job students go into they will end up using their mathematical skills. An excellent website to look at is www.mathscareers.org.uk
