Drama, AS

UPDATED 20160929 11:12:29

AS Drama and Theatre Studies has two units: Unit 1 - Performance Workshop (20%) This is an energetic exploration of theatre practitioners, usually Stanislavski, Brecht, Berkoff and Artaud, designed to really open up your understanding of theatre and the massive contrasts within it. You learn about performing in varied styles through workshops and small group practical work leading to a series of performances in different styles. From this, you choose two styles that will form the basis of your exam in this unit. You will work in a small group and rehearse a scripted extract from a play, and also create a devised piece of theatre that is linked to the extract in some way. You will work with the ideas and theories of two practitioners you have studied so that each piece is in a different style. If you are particularly interested in technical production skills such as lighting, sound, stage or costume design you could elect to be assessed in any one of these skills. Unit 2 – Text In Performance (30%) You will study two plays from different periods of theatre history. In a written exam you will be asked to refer to a short section of each play and analyse the scene considering things like the interpretation of roles; atmosphere and staging potential; and reflect on the way the play was originally performed. You will also answer a third question which explores on your reaction as a member of the audience to two live theatre productions. It goes without saying that we run trips to productions both locally and further afield that you can write about in your exam. And that’s the AS. But, what’s particularly good about the course is the way in which it prepares you for the freedom and challenges you have in the second year. This is why we really recommend that if you take the subject, you opt to stick with it for the full two years.
