Unit 1 - Understanding Dance 40% of AS (20% of A Level) This unit leads up to a 1 hour 30 minutes written paper and focuses on personal studio practice and the study of five professional dance works. The paper has two sections: A – structured questions which are not to dissimilar to the GCSE dance paper style questions and: B – two 20 mark essay questions which require a more detailed analysis of studio practice or professional dance works. Unit 2 – Choreography and Performance 60% of AS (30% of A Level) This is practical course work which requires pupils to create a solo dance of around 3 minutes using a set question as a stimulus. There are four set questions supplied by AQA of which you will focus on one. The solo will be examined as a performance and as a piece of choreography. You will also be required to perform in a group dance that will be choreographed by the teacher alongside the group. This will be examined as a performance piece only. Two sections: A – solo choreography and performance (60 marks) B – performance in a duo/trio (30 marks) Unit 3 – Dance Appreciation: Content and Context 25% of A Level In this unit there are two specific focuses set by AQA. One will be the detailed analysis of a professional dance work, the other an area of study (maybe a dance company or time period). This unit leads up to a 1 hour 30 minutes examination in which pupils will answer two 40 mark essay questions. Two sections: A – one question on chosen area of study (40 marks) B – one question on set work studied (40 marks) Unit 4 – Group Choreography and Solo Performance 25% of A Level This unit will lead to a practical examination of a solo performance created in the style of a chosen choreographer. Also, you will be required to create a group choreography piece in which you will not perform in. Two sections: A – group dance choreography (45 marks) B – solo dance performance (30 marks)
