Year 1 Unit 1 – Exploration of Drama and Theatre You will study through practical exploration of a chosen text applying the theories of practitioners and their performance style. Candidates will submit a live theatre evaluation based on the performance rather than the play. Unit 2 – Theatre Text in Performance Candidates build on their knowledge and experience gained from the exploration of plays in unit 1; performing scripted text to a live audience in the form of monologue or duologue and as part of a group. Candidates will underpin their work with their knowledge of theatre practitioners. Year 2 Unit 3 – Exploration of Dramatic Performance Using a selected and explored theme a performance is devised and performed to a specified audience. The work created must be influenced by recognised theatre practitioners or theatre companies and demonstrates how choices and decisions are made in relation to the piece as a whole and in particular the final performance. Unit 4 – Theatre Text in Context The basis of study for this unit is the role of the Director; candidates are required to have knowledge of how a Director works with a company in preparing a text for performance. Candidates are also expected to see a performance of a classic text to consider the impact of the play from the perspective of an audience demonstrating an understanding of the play in its contemporary interpretation. Future pathways: Drama develops a huge range of skills in students including confidence in written and oral communication, team work, problem solving, memory and recall, empathy and physical strength and control. Drama can lead to courses and careers in Theatre, Media, Journalism, Social work, Psychology and many others.
