A-level Maths

UPDATED 20161006 15:40:39

Year 12 units: (three modules) Core 1 and Core 2 - pure mathematics. This part of the course is taken by all candidates. It develops algebraic techniques of simplification and equation solving well beyond the level of GCSE. The two branches of calculus are introduced: differentiation deals with rates of change and integration studies the cumulative effect of a continuous variable. Other topics include co-ordinate geometry, algebraic and trigonemetrical functions and the introduction of logarithm and exponential functions. For the third module students will choose between Statistics and Mechanics 1. Mechanics looks at the mathematics of the real world by studying forces and equations of motion. If you are taking Physics as one of your choices, mechanics will support this. Statistics is similar to the Data Handling Module that you have studied at GCSE and is concerned with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. Statistics is often used in biology, geography and the social sciences (Psychology, Economics, Sociology etc). Year 13 units: (three modules) Core 3 and Core 4 cover more pure mathematics including vectors. For the third module we expect that students will study either Statistics 2, Mechanics 2 or Decision 1 depending on student’s choice during Year 12.. Future pathways: An A Level in Mathematics is essential for many Higher Education courses, for example in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and, of course, Mathematics. It is also impressive in many other areas such as Medicine, Business, Accountancy, Law etc.
