Unit 1: Law making and the legal system. Students will learn about how laws are made including parliamentary law making, case (judicial) law making and the role of delegated legislation. They will also learn about different areas of the legal profession, how the criminal court process and civil process works and the use of lay people in the law in both juries and lay magistrates. Unit 2: The concept of liability. Students will study the criminal law including the different elements of criminal liability, the non-fatal offences (such as GBH and ABH), criminal procedure including bail and the court process and the aims and types of sentences available. They will earn how to apply these principles to real life and scenario situations. Students will also study and apply when there is liability in negligence including how the award of compensation is calculated. Unit 3: Homicide Students will study and learn how to apply the elements of Murder, voluntary manslaughter (loss of control and diminished responsibility), and involuntary manslaughter (unlawful act and gross negligence). Students will also learn and apply the use of general defences including provocation, self-defence and intoxication. Unit 4: Tort Students will develop their knowledge of negligence to include more complex topics such as psychiatric harm, medical negligence, occupier’s liability, trespass and vicarious liability. Future pathways: This course will provide a valuable entry qualification to Higher Education as well as being relevant to many career opportunities including those in the legal profession such as a Barrister/Advocate, Crown Prosecutor, Legal Executive, Solicitor, or Legal Secretary.

Name: A-level Law Qualification title: GCE A Level in Law Qualification type: Assessment Externally assessed examinations that range between 1.5 hours for Units 1, 2 and 3 and 2 hours for unit 4. The examination is a combination of knowledge questions and application questions to a scenario that will be provided. In units 3 and 4 the students will also evaluate the law, suggesting strengths, weaknesses and improvements that could be made.
