Unit 1 - Listening, reading, writing (35% of A Level) The listening and reading tasks are similar to those of GCSE in structure. For the writing element, students write an essay of approximately 230 words. The examination is two hours long. Unit 2 - Speaking (15% of A Level) The speaking examination is conducted with one of the subject teachers. It lasts for 15 minutes and the most successful students speak with a degree of fluency and spontaneity. Themes for units 1 & 2: Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living & Lifestyle, Family & Relationships. Unit 3 - Research, understanding and writing (35% of A Level) The format of this examination follows that of unit 1. However, there is a translation section added after the reading tasks. The examination is two hours and thirty minutes long. Unit 4 - Speaking (15% of A Level) The speaking examination is conducted by one of the subject teachers. It lasts for 15 minutes and students are expected to present their ideas and opinions. More successful students are able to argue against arguments and to give coherent and balanced points of view. Themes for units 3 & 4: Environment, multicultural Society, Social Issues, Cultural Topics (a choice from a historical study, a French speaking author, playwright or director and a regional study) Future pathways: An advanced qualification in French followed by job specific training: or a qualification where French is a component, giving breadth and an international dimension to another subject.
