Component 1 – 3 hour exam Students’ understanding of four of the main topics (Imagined Worlds; Remembered Places; Poetic Voice and Language Analysis) is assessed during this component. Novels such as The Handmaid’s Tale By Margaret Attwood and poets such as Robert Browning and Carol Ann Duffy will be studied in this unit. An anthology with the theme of Paris will also be focused on and analysed. This provides students with a balance of both “literariness” and “Literalness” as it combines the best of both literary and nonfiction texts. Component 2 – 2.5 hour exam For this unit students are required to produce a creative and evaluative piece of writing based on source texts. This suits students who are both creative and analytical. During this unit we will also study playwrights such as Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and William Shakespeare. The focus of these plays will be “conflict in drama” and will allow close and detailed analysis of the texts. Component 3 - Coursework This unit focuses on the spoken word. We will investigate an area of interest in both literary and non-literary discourse. This will be student led and will focus upon either a technique or theme present in texts. Future pathways: English is a strong, traditional ‘A’ Level with good academic standing at Universities.
