Year 1: Unit 1 – Materials, Components and Application (25% of grade). You will learn through practical activities and projects about the physical and mechanical properties of a wide range of materials, manufacturing processes, health and safety, computer aided design and manufacture, product life cycles, environmental sustainability, product and consumer safety and ergonomics and anthropometrics. Unit 2 – Learning Through Designing and Making (25% of grade). You will submit a design and make project. Year 2: Unit 3 – Design and Manufacture (25% of grade). You will further develop knowledge and understanding gained in the AS level and also gain new insight in to redesigning existing products, conservation, moral, economic, social and environmental responsibility and the designer and production procedures and methods. Unit 4 – Design and Making Practice (25% of grade). You will submit a single, substantial design and make project. Future pathways: This course encourages candidates to develop a broad view of design and technology, develop a capacity to design and make products and appreciate the relationship between design, materials, manufacture and making. It could lead to a Higher Education course in many design related areas such as Product Design, teaching, technology related careers, Industrial Design and Architecture.
