Unit 1: Danc1 – Understanding Dance Students study the theory behind dance, focusing on set works, practitioners and the anatomy and physiology behind dance; demonstrating their knowledge and understanding through a written paper. Unit 2: Danc2 – Choreography and Performance Students practically explore and develop skills in contemporary dance and ballet styles. For assessment students are required to choreograph and perform a solo and either a duo or trio performance based on stimuli set by the exam board in a balletic/contemporary style. Unit 3: Danc3 – Dance Appreciation – Content and Context Students study, in detail, different dance styles focusing on content, constituent features and the aural and physical setting. Candidates demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through a written paper. Unit 4: Danc4 – Group Choreography and Solo Performance Students are to choreograph a group dance based on stimuli set by the exam board. Each candidate will also perform a solo piece, assessed by an external moderator. Future pathways A qualification in Dance can lead to a number of opportunities in further and higher education. Students can progress on to leading dance organisations and institutions such as Bird College and the Laban Centre as well as entering reputable degree courses in Dance such as those at the University of Derby, Coventry, Leeds and Chester. Students are also able to progress in to the dance performance or theatre industry working with companies as dancers, choreographers, teachers, administrators and notators. Dance develops a wide range of skills in students including performance, choreography, team work, memory and recall, aural communication, physical strength and control.
