Sociology Advanced Level Sociology is the study of human beings in society, undertaken in a systematic way. The subject examines the interaction of human beings with each other, and with the society around them: do people ‘make’ people? Sociology has a reputation as a critical subject because it avoids ‘obvious’ or ‘common sense’ explanations of human activity, searching instead for explanations at a deeper level. Students will become familiar with a range of sociological schools offering different approaches. Students will go on to examine the methodologies employed by sociologists in gathering data – principally social surveys and observation techniques. Theoretical and methodological approaches will then be applied in the study of a range of social institutions. Initially, these will comprise the modern family and the education system.
