This course is ideal for anybody wishing to follow a career in nursing, teaching, teaching support or progressing onto further study at University through our Access to Higher Education course. Covering all of the mandatory units in the Science National Curriculum, you will gain a strong foundation for further study or progression.

Name: GCSE Core Science Qualification title: GCSE in Science A Qualification type: Assessment Classes will address topics that benefit from discussion or practical work. However there are some topics that you will have to cover through individual study away from classes, guided by the course book. You should expect to spend several hours per week outside class time carrying out additional study. The assessment for this course falls into two parts: You will sit three exams, one each on the Physics, Biology and Chemistry content - each exam is one hour long and will be taken at the end of the course You will complete a number of externally set assignments to test understanding of the investigative process. These are carried out during lesson time and involve carrying out a simple practical investigation and reflecting on its outcome. Entry requirements

All necessary practical materials and class handouts will be provided, with books and additional material available in the Learning Resource Centre. You will benefit from access to the internet, and will be encouraged to make use of the computers in the College LRC in your own time. You will be required to provide and bring your own stationery, and also: A copy of the Course Book: AQA GCSE Science A Students Book, ISBN 978-1-4085-0822-0 (available from £5 at online retailers) A scientific calculator (costing under £10) Laboratory coat - although some are available to borrow, you may prefer to buy your own laboratory coat (cost approximately £15) Your course book and calculator should be brought to every class.
