A Level in Design and Technology: Product Design (3-D Design)

UPDATED 20161017 11:54:31

Units 1 and 3 examine candidates’ in-depth knowledge of materials and processes used in the manufacture of products as well as looking at Design Movements, both past and present that have shaped our views and opinions in terms of architecture and product design. A major issue within all the theory content is that of “sustainability” and candidates are encouraged to view man’s impact on the environment, now and in the future. Units 2 and 4 examine candidates’ ability to design and manufacture a product, from first principles right through to its final and effective manufacture. They are then expected to fully evaluate their solutions against a set specification and previously stated criteria offering potential improvements. These two units offer candidates the opportunity to act as managers, designers, market researchers, industrialists and customers and encourages them to consider the impact that their product has on the environment. The course should develop an awareness of how man has developed his environment through the constant development of new technologies, processes and materials. It gives students not only an opportunity to develop their own skills but, above all else, an awareness of how Design and Technology affects us all and is, by its nature, something that man does and needs to be fully aware of as we move further into the 21st Century. This course offers students the opportunity to design, manufacture and evaluate meaningful products manufactured from resistant materials, from first principles, and should benefit anyone interested in pursuing a career in any form of engineering, along with design or architectural based careers. It offers active development of real skills, knowledge, processes and an awareness of man’s impact on the planet
