Please note that absolutely no previous knowledge of Latin or Greek, or even of the Ancient World in general, is expected of those who take this subject. All necessary background is fully explained at the beginning of the course, and all sources are studied in English. The essential requirements for success are: an interest in history per se, an enjoyment of reading and research, good reasoning skills and the ability to write good English. The course is accessible to those with GCSE English Literature at Grade B or above and, where GCSE History, Latin or Classical Civilisation have been taken, a Grade B or above is required. We will consider all boys wishing to study the course. If you fail to meet these requirements you will be assessed on an individual basis, so do not be deterred. The full A Level is made up of two aspects (which are each examined at both AS and A2 Level): Greek: the 5th century BC – an era which produced some profoundly influential characters, architecture, literature, philosophy and political thought: e.g. Pericles, the Parthenon, the plays of Sophocles, Socrates, Athenian democracy. Roman: the 1st century BC – an era in which a long-established political system – the Roman Republic – gradually broke down to be replaced by the centralised autocratic rule of the Emperors. Characters and themes include: Julius Caesar, practical politics, imperialism, propaganda.
