Drama is a well-respected and established subject at Westlands. It is taught in purpose-built studios with comprehensive sound and lighting technology. If you have a creative instinct for communicating your ideas through drama, and are keen on acting or the visual and technical side of theatre, and you enjoy watching and creating live theatre – then this is the course for you! It is useful to have taken Drama at GCSE level, but not essential. Units of Work The course focuses on working with plays, and provides the opportunity to study plays from the point of view of a director, designer, performer and critic. The qualification is designed to enable students to acquire a knowledge and understanding of the language of drama and theatre, as well as to develop your performing and analytical skills. The course demands practical, creative and communication skills. You will extend your ability to create drama in either a performing or a production role. You will also write about drama, take part in productions, visit the theatre, as well as studying plays and playwrights. Unit 1 : Exploration of Drama and Theatre. Internal assessment: practical drama activities with supporting exploration notes; evaluation of live theatre. Unit 2 : Theatre in Performance. External assessment: Monologue / Duologue performance or desirealisation. Group performance or design realisation.
