The Motor Vehicle Maintenance Level 1 Diploma is ideal for both students who are starting out on their journey into the Motor Vehicle Industry and those who just want to try out working with cars to see if they enjoy it. Training takes place over 8 hours per week at the Motor Vehicle Training Garage working towards the Motor Vehicle Diploma and 4 hours at Wilson Road working on Employability and Functional Skills. The vocational course consists of 50% practical work on live, working cars within the purpose built, state of the art training centre and 50% theoretically. Assessment is carried out via e-portfolio. Students will also complete a Work Placement as part of the course, allowing them to experience first hand what life is like working in a busy Motor Vehicle Garage. The Motor Vehicle qualification covers all aspects involved with maintenance and repair of cars. Some of the areas covered include: Health and Safety Tools, equipment and materials Spark Ignition Systems (Petrol) Compression Ignition Systems (Diesel) Engine Cooling and Lubrication Steering and Suspension Wheels and Tyres Exhaust Systems Fuel, Ignition, Air and Exhaust Systems Removing and Replacing Engine Units and Components Braking Systems Driveline Maintenance All these areas are carried out with half the time spent on the theory and half spent doing practical on working cars within the garage. Students also complete Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT at varying levels depending on previous qualification and ability level. Students can be expected to be challenged to achieve as high a qualification as they can. The course also includes work preparation skills and a work experience placement to experience a work environment.
