On this A level course you will study the following course content: In the first year: Physical Chemistry; atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, kinetics, chemical equilibria and Le Chatelier's principle, oxidation, reduction and redox equations Inorganic Chemistry; periodicity of period 3 elements, Group 2 alkaline earth metals (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) and Group 7(17), the halogens ( F2, Cl2,Br2, I2 ) 3.3 Organic Chemistry; introduction to organic chemistry naming, structure, structual isomerism and key chemical features of organic molecules. In depth study of the chemistry of alkanes, haloalkanes, alkenes, and alcohols. Organic analysis to include mass spectrometry and infared spectroscopy to identify organic molecules. In addition to course content you will carry out a variety of practical procedures and be expected to keep a log of these. You will also develop analytical and evaluative chemical skills. In the second year: Physical Chemistry; thermodynamics, rate equations, equilibrium constant Kp for homogeneous systems, electrode potential and electrochemical cells, acids and bases. Inorganic Chemistry; properties of period 3 elements and their oxides, chemistry and uses of transition metals, reactions of transition metal ions in aqueous solution. Organic Chemistry; optical isomerism, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, aromatic chemistry of benzene, amines, polymers (eg, polyethene, PVC, nylon and kevlar) strtucture and function ofamino acids, proteins and DNA, organic synthesis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and chromatography.
