The option studied in Unit 3 concentrates on the nature of, and policies associated with, imperial, democratic and authoritarian regimes in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. Students are required to study a range of factors associated with social and political change. Students will also study two specific controversial issues related to this period, namely: 'The extent of Germany's responsibility for the outbreak of World War One' and 'The popularity and efficiency of the Nazi Regime'. In Unit 4, students will address key aspects of Russian society in order to develop their understanding of the process of change over a long period of time (100 years). In Part A, students will complete an in - depth enquiry into the short - term significance of their chosen war, using both primary and secondary source material. In Part B, they will consider the significance of either World War One or World War Two as a key turning point in the development of modern Russia. They will assess the impact of their chosen war in the context of the entire hundred - year period.
