Barbering has a unique position within the hair and beauty sector, as it combines traditional skills such as scissors over comb and shaving, with new specialist techniques such as 2D and 3D sculpting. The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Barbering provides the fundamental skills and knowledge required for a successful and rewarding career as a barber. The apprenticeship the following mandatory core units: Shampoo, Condition and Treat the Hair and Scalp, Develop and Maintain Your Effectiveness at Work, Cut Men's Hair Using Basic Techniques, Cut Facial Hair to Shape Using Basic Techniques, Dry and Finish Men's Hair, Create Basic Outlines and Detailing in Hair. The list of optional units includes: Relax Hair, Perm and Neutralise Hair, Plait and Twist Hair, Temporarily Attach Hair to Enhance a Style, Colour and Lighten Men's Hair, Fulfil Salon Reception Duties You will achieve a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering. Unless exempt on entry, you will also achieve Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths.You will learn through a combination of on- and off-the-job training. You will attend college (Above Bar Training) on a day release basis and spend the rest of your time earning and learning in the workplace. You will be assessed on a continuous basis through a combination of knowledge and practical assessment activities, including assessment of activities in the workplace. The Apprenticeship has a minimum duration of 12 months. The typical duration for a new entrant to the industry is 12 - 15 months. Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by an Apprenticeship Achievement Officer.Intermediate apprentices, with support and opportunities in the workplace, can progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Barbering.
