The course comprises 4 units of study and will run for one year, as follows: Unit 1 Design - Learners will study in depth their own choice of subject, from which, both designs for Units 3 and 4 will be developed. Unit 2 Sampling - This unit is all about the practice of the skills. Students will use appropriate tools and materials to experiment, explore and extend their knowledge of both traditional and non-traditional methods, tools and materials by sampling to create the required finish. Unit 3 - Students will design and make a 3D constructed item displaying advanced skills in embroidery. Unit 4 - students will design and make a metre panel using advanced skills in embroidery. Assessment takes place throughout the course by the tutor, internal verification and by City & Guilds external verifier. Level 3 Certificate will be awarded with a pass, merit or distinction.Course delivery will be both practical and theory. There will be a combination of lectures, demonstrations and discussions with as much practical activity as possible, making this course as 'hands on' as possible.Progression would be to either the Contemporary Textiles Workshops or the Foundation Degree in Stitched Textiles (FdA).

Entry requirements

The college has sewing machines available for individual use, basic art supplies for design work and a small departmental library of relevant books. Students should bring to the FIRST CLASS a notebook and pen, summer sketchbook to the theme of 'Opposites', hand stitch kit, embroidery hoop and a selection of unusual threads in own choice of colour, camera.
